April Compition Results
The new season opened with the Midweek Medal on April 5th. Even though course conditions were less than perfect after the severe winter weather a strong field set off to contend for the first important medal of the year. Karl Brown laid down a marker and proved that he could indeed be a regular contender again this season. His score was six shots lower than Mick O’Connor back in second.
There was much excitement ahead of the Monthly Medal a few days later. Everyone looked forward to welcoming the New Club Captain James O’Sullivan into office. At the drive in ceremony outgoing Captain Graham Jackson ended a memorable year in grand style by holing a 5ft putt before James took to the tee and hit a very respectable drive with a Power-Built Citation persimmon driver and 1980’s balata ball! The nerves didn’t get the better of him for sure and the ball fizzed off the clubface to the sound of loud applause. Back in the clubhouse there was a small prize giving for all the winners of the winter competitions after which the days Medal scores were recorded revealing that John Dixon had just edged out Peter Philips and Alan Smith on count back after all three returned 73’s.
There was also a tie for the Midweek Stableford later in the month between John Hawkins and Brian Umney. It was John by virtue of one point who survived the count back drama. In the Monthly Stableford, which is also the first round of the popular Stableford Cup, there was the largest field of the fledgling season so far. Conditions were much more favourable for scoring and you could sense the optimism amongst the groups as they set off down the first fairway. However, the lack of golf throughout the winter took it’s tole on some and the scoring wasn’t as low as anticipated. At the end of the day John Procter stood head and shoulders above the rest leaving Peter Phillips in the runners-up spot for the second time this month.
After enjoying a rest bite from the weather for a week conditions sadly deteriorated just ahead of the traditional Rabbit Cup outing, which has now been rescheduled for the middle of May. With the season now a month old there’s much to look forward to in the coming weeks. Entry forms are available from the clubhouse for the Annual Hickory Championship on May 24th. Played over 18 Holes on the Little Links this unique competition allows players to really experience golf in its original form. There is also the chance to play in a Texas Scramble at the end of May by signing up in the clubhouse.
